Dr. Reitz, a local veterinarian and former 1997 SCA graduate, visited the Kindergarten class at Sunbury Christian Academy. He brought along his dog Bingo and one of his helpers, Amy. Dr. Reitz talked about how to take care of your pets. He also brought a variety jars showing various things that were removed from different animals. The Kindergarteners saw heartworms, tapeworms, ticks, and even a rock that was removed from a little kitten’s belly. YUK!!!! They enjoyed looking at the specimens. Dr. Reitz instructed the kids how to listen to heart and lung or breathing sounds. Before Dr. Reitz left, he showed the class that Bingo could do a few doggie tricks, for treats of course!!

Three yards of fleece, two hours of time and a servant’s heart were all it took to create a soft, cozy blankets to be used by local children in need. Mrs. Rothermel’s 10th grade Creative Living class, along with the 4th and 5th graders created a total of 28 blankets for the Central Susquehanna Valley Chapter of Project Linus. Blanket making was not only a great service project for the local community, but a neat opportunity for the older students to interact with the elementary students.

Sunbury Christian Academy was excited to finally cut the ribbon to its new alternative learning classroom this month, an addition that will enhance the education of students with learning disabilities and differing learning styles.

It has been the dream of SCA’s administrator to provide more individual help for students with various learning disabilities. Out of that dream came a passion to help all students to reach their fullest potential in Christ.

With the Lord’s leading and much prayer, this dream has led to the establishment of the Alternative Learning Lab (ALL) at SCA. The lab provides one-on-one or small group instruction that allows us to fully minister to all of our students, all the time, and with all types of learning styles.

Our lab functions 5 full days a week. While some of our students receive help twice a week from our local Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit tutor, the lab allows them help the other 3 days as well!

The school committee was so supportive; they made this dream a reality this year. A beautiful module housing two classrooms was purchased so we could move some students out into the module – which they love! We then took one of the rooms centrally located in the building and set it up as the ALL. Students from kindergarten through grade 12 can be accommodated in the lab.

The ALL is much more than a typical resource room. Not only do students get remedial instruction, but also advanced instruction. The various learning styles of the students are addressed to enhance their learning. Students may take optional electives, AP courses, and as new students come in needing different classes than those currently offered, they can be accommodated through the Switched-On Online program in the lab. Those lacking Bible instruction can take basic courses to give them a solid foundation for future Bible classes. Different languages are offered as well.

The Bible says, in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” God has given parents the responsibility of training children, and SCA partners with parents in this endeavor.
Needless to say, SCA is excited about the new opportunities provided by the Alternative Learning Lab. If you would like information on the Sunbury Christian Academy, please call the school office at 570-473-7592.

In the final game of the year the Lady Eagles suffered a heartbreaking loss to Great Commission with a final score of 46-36.
The girls took an early 9-7 lead in the 1st quarter. Going into the locker room at halftime they were only down by four points. Great Commission opened up a 10 point lead in the 3rd with the quarter ending 33-23. The Lady Eagles were able to regain their footing and keep the scoring even in the 4th but they were unable to regain the lead and overcome the 10 point deficit that was created in the 3rd. Leading the Lady Eagles in scoring tonight were Carissa Erdman with 12 points and Torri Erdman with eight points.

Congratulations to Carissa Erdman, Abby Daddario and Blake Spangler-Jones for being named ACAA All-Stars.
