SCA Eagles at Line Mountain Tournament

What a great tournament for the Eagles this weekend. The day started off with a game against Mt. Carmel Area High School. The Eagles scored first with Tanner Gutelius receiving a beautiful cross from Derek Mathews coming down the right wing. Gutelius received the perfectly placed ball and redirected it into Mt. Carmel’s net for the first score of the game. Less than 30 seconds later Adam Clemens received yet another cross from Derek Mathews as Clemens placed one in the lower 90 to put the Eagles ahead 2-0 going into the half. With 8:58 left in the game Mathews was pushed to the ground from behind in the penalty box as the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick. Blake Spangler-Jones used his skill to place a perfect ball into the back of the net to give the Eagles an assurance goal for a 3-0 lead. As the clock wound down Seth Kabonick picked up a pass in Mt. Carmel’s side of the field and headed toward the net and set off a shot at the goal. Mt. Carmel’s keeper handled the ball but bobbled it back into play and Kabonick was there for the rebound and set off another shot as the Mt. Carmel keeper handled it again but did not secure the ball as Kabonick crashed the net for a third opportunity and capitalized on the shot to put SCA up 4-0 with 1:38 left in the game. The victory sealed the teams place in the championship game vs NCS.

Heading into the championship game the team was ready to meet NCS for the second time this week. The Eagles had a few opportunities and were taking away some opportunities also. NCS had played the ball deep into SCA territory and a mishandle by the Eagles defense placed the ball in front of the net as NCS capitalized on the misplay for the first goal of the game with 12 minutes left in the half. Looking to go into the half only down by one a second miscommunication created yet another opportunity for NCS to score as the Eagles found themselves down by two as the first half ended. Heading into the second half the Eagles were looking to bring the game within reach but with 7:19 left in the game NCS put the game away as SCA settled for a second place finish in the Line Mt. Tournament with a 3-0 loss in championship game.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday, September 3 as they host Columbia County Christian. Come on out and cheer the teams on as they continue with ACAA play.
