STEM Competition

SCA’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Team placed first in our district level of the PA Governor’s STEM competition. This annual competition is designed to engage teams of 5 high school students in using STEM principles to solve a real-life problem of their choice. Team members – Nathan Derk, Alex Gessner, Justin Keller, Colton Long, and Seth Kabonick- and their adviser, Mrs. Keller, began meeting last October to identify a problem, and plan, create and improve the solution. The state provided a $500 stipend which the team used to develop a drone-based spraying system which makes it safer for an individual to target pests such as wasps and tent worms by avoiding the need for ladders and keeping the user away from the dangerous pests and the toxic chemicals used to treat them. The team presented and demonstrated this solution during the competition as well as competed in a Project in a Box competition, taking top honors in both parts of the competition. Congratulations and thanks to the team for all of their hard work over the last several months to prepare for this event.
